MON, Aug 16 Travel/Arrive Portland, Tour Orientation, Welcome Dinner Meals: D
Travel from your home city to Portland, ME. You will be provided transport to the hotel. Relax at the hotel or take to the streets of Portland after your arrival. In the evening, we’ll start with a Tour Orientation in the hotel to meet the group and learn about details of the tour. Afterward, we’ll enjoy a Welcome Dinner featuring Maine fare. The restaurant is in the Old Port District near the waterfront. In 2001 & 2006, it was named Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States by Gourmet Magazine. In 2004, the chef was named ‘Best Chef – Northeast’ by the James Beard Foundation.
Discover the shores of Casco Bay by bicycle today featuring Portland’s coast, breakwater, parks, communities and lighthouses along the way. Enjoy magnificent views and learn about the history of Portland and the Liberty Ships built during the Second World War. We’ll visit Bug Light and Portland Head Light on the spectacular shores of Cape Elizabeth where we’ll enjoy Portland’s best lobster roll. Portland Head Light is a beacon for those out in open waters. We’ll continue cycling past saltwater farms to Two Lights State Park and Kettle Cove, a popular local beach. This is an easy but full-day ride. For those that don’t want to ride, we will be van supported. Once back in town, the evening will be at leisure for relaxing or discovering more of Portland on your own.
Today, we’ll meet a local guide for a ‘Land, Sea To Fork’ culinary walking tour in Portland. This is an authentic experience discovering how Maine’s people, environment and economy interact to shape this celebrated food destination. Enjoy seasonal dishes from five of Portland’s world-class restaurants and explore the story behind the plates. We’ll visit Portland venues where we’ll sample delectable Maine-inspired foods and learn from those who craft culinary delights. The evening will be free for relaxing or discovering more of Portland on your own.
Today, we’ll leave Portland and make our way to Rockland, ME, where we’ll check-in on the Schooner Stephen Taber in preparation for our cruise. The Stephen Taber is one of Maine’s historic windjammers and will be celebrating its 150 birthday in 2021. This will be an experience unlike any other – superb sailing, striking scenery, activities aboard/onshore and an elevated culinary experience. Captain Noah will give us an onboard briefing and orientation when we arrive. We’ll then walk to a local farm-to-table restaurant in Rockland to enjoy dinner. The restaurant features locally-sourced fresh ingredients in a comfortable, casual atmosphere. That night will be spent on the boat at the dock in preparation for our departure the next morning.
Wake up to the scent of a gourmet breakfast cooked onboard in the wood-fired stove – all of it made from scratch. The meals on the Stephen Taber are scrumptious! After breakfast, we’ll head out for a 2-1/2 day Maine windjammer sail. Daylight hours are spent relaxing while sailing in Penobscot Bay amongst untouched islands. Each day includes a walk or hike onshore. Ofen, Captain Noah will stop at a local fishing village. Evenings are filled with easy camaraderie, music from the captain & his mates and gourmet dinners. All trips on the Stephen Taber are unique – all are memorable!
We will be cruising along Maine’s coastline, inlets and islands looking while looking for a spot for a lobster bake (weather permitting). There is no plan, no itinerary – just the schooner sent by the wind (no engine, either!). The captain, Noah Barnes, has been sailing on the Stephen Taber since he was a child. He and his wife took ownership of the windjammer from Noah’s parents. Everything he does is with gusto and joy. He is a delight as are the staff on board. The camaraderie of the staff and guests is one of the best parts of this experience.
The Stephen Taber will return to port in Rockland by late morning. We’ll check in to Samoset Resort in Rockland for two days of relaxation and optional day trips.
Today will be a free day for guests. Those that want can taxi up on a day trip to Rockport or Camden. Others might prefer to relax at the pool, play golf or choose another of the resort’s activities. In the evening, we’ll gather for our tour Farewell Dinner at a select restaurant featuring Maine culinary delights.
We will be transported to the Portland Airport for the flight home.
